Avisena Healthcare recognises its role as an agent of change. Our steadfast commitment to the environment is focused on a variety of initiatives: promoting energy conservation, going paperless, collaborating with local councils and participating in global environmental efforts.
In collaboration with the Hulu Selangor District Forest Office, we organized a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme which involved 80 saplings planted at Sungai Sendat Forest Eco park.
This venue was particularly chosen for the programme because the eco-tourism destination was located in the permanent forest reserve area. More than 60 volunteers, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists, were involved in making the tree-planting programme a success. In addition to tree planting activities, there were initiatives to beautify the Sungai Sendat Forest Eco Park area, including the provision of recycling bins and the repainting of existing huts.
Since September 2017, we’ve supported Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA)’s drive towards achieving its low carbon city status by 2030. The popular initiative which attracts participation by the thousands is held every Sunday in the second week of the month and is filled with activities for participants of all ages.
Here, we take the opportunity to provide free health screening such as vital signs monitoring as well as blood glucose and cholesterol level checks.
As a flagship programme by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC), the challenge aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate development of low carbon cities. It outlines 5 specific areas of focus including energy consumption and water conservation- segments in which Avisena Healthcare, in collaboration with MBSA, has made significant impact.
Our efforts have resulted in combined annual savings from our hospitals amounting to approximately RM1.4million which translates to 2,123 tCO2e/annum (tonnes of Carbon Dioxide Emission per annum).
We take action where it counts by improving the efficiency of our HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning) systems where power consumption is typically at its highest. This is followed by group-wide efforts to cultivate a conservation-driven culture and to be mindful with usage of lighting, office appliances and medical equipment.
Our recent project includes replacement of Avisena Specialist Hospital’s Chiller System – which will help us cut yearly emissions by 1,032 tCO2e.
Our Hospital Information System went paperless in 2016 resulting in usage reductions of 30% – yet we persisted to do better.
This has culminated in a renewed pledge in 2022 with various departments within Avisena Healthcare taking proactive efforts to reduce dependence on paper with adoption of digital signatures and a range of online forms to document and manage inspections, surveys and reports.
Every little effort towards protecting the earth counts. While our hospitals have energy requirements that are necessary and unique to its functions, we participate annually in the symbolic action of ‘switching off’ any way we can.
We also ensure that our employees are well informed about this acclaimed initiative and the impact we can each make as climate-conscious citizens.
