SHAH ALAM: Avisena Specialist Hospital today held the Run for Pink event, aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer within the community, particularly in Shah Alam. With the theme ‘Hope in Every Mile’, the event offered two race categories – 5km and 10km – and received an enthusiastic response from people across the Klang Valley.
Dr. Razman Abd Karim, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Avisena Specialist Hospital, stated that this initiative is part of Avisena’s efforts to provide early awareness about breast cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers in Malaysia. He emphasised the importance of such events not only to raise awareness but also to encourage a healthy lifestyle within the community.
“We are committed to helping cancer patients, and as part of our initiative, a portion of the registration fees will be donated to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA), which also participated today by offering free breast self-examination checks to attendees and visitors,” said Dr. Razman.
He also reminded women of the importance of performing self-examinations from the age of 18 and highlighted that breast cancer awareness must be an ongoing effort. In addition to the race, Dr. Razman introduced the latest breast cancer diagnostic technology available at Avisena Specialist Hospital, such as the 3D Digital Mammogram. This technology not only produces 3D images but also increases breast cancer detection rates by 25%.
“Early detection of breast cancer is crucial to ensuring more effective treatment for patients and reducing treatment costs when cancer is detected at an early stage.”
He further added that Avisena is committed to providing high-quality services to the community. The hospital is in the process of building an additional facility, expected to be fully completed by 2027. “This new facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art chemotherapy and radiotherapy services, solidifying Avisena as the largest comprehensive oncology hub in Shah Alam and Klang,” added Dr. Razman.
Overall, by 2027, Avisena Specialist Hospital will provide 275 beds, 10 operating theatres, including a hybrid operating room, and 83 specialist suites. The Run for Pink event is a small step in Avisena’s ongoing efforts to increase breast cancer awareness since 2023, and the hospital plans to make it an annual event. This year, Run for Pink introduced a new concept called Pink Village, offering various engaging activities for participants and visitors, including activity booths with Avisena Specialist Hospital.
“We hope this effort brings a positive change in people’s lives toward a healthier lifestyle. Healthy body, healthy community—that is our hope,” added Dr. Razman.
The event also featured a sharing session by Dr. Sarinah Basro, Breast and Endocrine Surgeon at Avisena Specialist Hospital, as well as a specially designed yoga session for cancer patients. This morning’s programme was attended by the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Avisena Healthcare, Puan Elina Nadia Omar, along with the management team of Avisena Specialist Hospital, who are dedicated to promoting breast cancer awareness within the community.
